Mai 2017 \u2013 Um Torflandschaften weltweit zu sch\u00fctzen, deren Bewohner zu unterst\u00fctzen und CO2-Emissionen einzuschr\u00e4nken, trafen sich heute politische Entscheidungstr\u00e4ger, Landwirte und Unternehmer aus aller Welt in Jakarta (Indonesien) zum \u201eGlobal Landscapes Forum: Peatlands Matter\u201c. Torflandschaften machen nur zirka drei bis f\u00fcnf Prozent des Festlands der Erde aus, geh\u00f6ren aber zu den weltweit gr\u00f6\u00dften CO2-Senken und liegen oft in Gebieten in denen sich Umweltschutz und wirtschaftliche Interessen gegen\u00fcberstehen. Millionen der \u00e4rmsten Menschen weltweit sind auf Torfgebiete als Lebensgrundlage angewiesen und nutzen sie vor allem f\u00fcr Fischfang und den Anbau von Reis und Nutzpflanzen. Das internationale Forum f\u00f6rdert nachweislich effektive Ma\u00dfnahmen vor Ort zur L\u00f6sung derartiger Interessenskonflikte und zur Umsetzung von neuen nachhaltigen Landwirtschaftspraktiken.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Angef\u00fchrt vom Zentrum f\u00fcr Internationale Forstwissenschaft (CIFOR), dem UN-Umweltprogramm (UNEP) und der Weltbank, verfolgt das Forum \u201ePeatlands Matter\u201c das Ziel, jene zerbrechlichen, kohlenstoffreichen Landschaften zu sch\u00fctzen, die eine Schl\u00fcsselrolle in der Bek\u00e4mpfung des Klimawandels darstellen.<\/p>\n

Professor Daniel Murdiyarso, Wissenschaftlicher Leiter bei CIFOR, sagt: \u201eMit seinem internationalen Netzwerk bietet das Global Landscapes Forum eine Plattform f\u00fcr den Austausch zwischen Meinungsf\u00fchrern, Entscheidern und Akteuren vor Ort, um eine Balance zwischen verschiedenen Interessen zu finden und Torfgebiete zu erhalten. Denn Torflandschaften sind nicht nur Heimat zahlreicher bedrohter Tierarten wie Orang-Utans, Nash\u00f6rner oder Leoparden, sondern stehen auch im Spannungsfeld zwischen der Nutzung als Lebensgrundlage von Millionen Menschen und dem Kampf gegen den Klimawandel.\u201c<\/p>\n

Zu Beginn des Jahres identifizierten Wissenschaftler bislang unbekannte Torffl\u00e4chen beispielloser Gr\u00f6\u00dfe in den Tropen, wie das gr\u00f6\u00dfte zusammenh\u00e4ngende Torfgebiet im Kongobecken. Tropische Torfsumpfw\u00e4lder sind die \u201eLungen der Welt\u201c und binden ein Drittel des weltweit gebundenen Kohlenstoffs. Fortschreitende Entw\u00e4sserung, Abbau oder Brandrodung f\u00fcr landwirtschaftliche Zwecke, vor allem f\u00fcr die Produktion von Palm\u00f6l, Zellstoff und Papier, gef\u00e4hrden das enorme Kohlenstoffspeicherpotential ungest\u00f6rter Torfgebiete. Durch unkontrollierte Nutzung f\u00fcr landwirtschaftliche Zwecke kann das CO2 freigesetzt werden und \u00fcber Jahrhunderte in der Atmosph\u00e4re verbleiben. Im Oktober 2015 verursachten \u00fcber 115.000 Torfbr\u00e4nde in Indonesien nachweislich zirka 15% der weltweiten j\u00e4hrlichen CO2-Emission innerhalb weniger Monate.<\/p>\n

Das Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) wurde in Warschau in 2013 von CIFOR, der Weltbank und UNEP gegr\u00fcndet, um eine unabh\u00e4ngige, wissenschafts-basierte, sektoren\u00fcbergreifende Plattform zu gr\u00fcnden, um Wissen zu teilen und Initiativen zu gr\u00fcnden, die widerstandsf\u00e4hige, vielf\u00e4ltige, gerechte und produktive Landfl\u00e4chen wiederherstellen und sch\u00fctzen. Das GLF verbindet tausende unterschiedliche Stakeholder aus \u00fcber 100 L\u00e4ndern, bietet Weiterbildungsm\u00f6glichkeiten, sammelt und teilt Wissen und forciert Ma\u00dfnahmen zur nachhaltigen, umweltfreundlichen Entwicklung.
